The Devil Bear attacks an archaeological dig.
Scrappy Review
4 out of 5
Scrappy tries to help by reassembling the broken pot. He helps get Scooby unstuck from the little cave. He guards the tents. He tries to fight the bear when he hears him. There are a couple moments of over ambition and foolhardy aggression but that's who he is. He demonstrates a talent for fishing. I really like it when Scrappy demonstrates hyper competence. Overall, he makes a good showing in this episode.
Way Too Much Detail
The gang are in the Grand Canyon. Their guide Ranger Brantley tells them archaeologists are digging at the old Native American cliff dwelling. When they go to visit, Professor Carver and an unidentified woman archaeologist tell them about the Devil Bear attack. Ranger Brantley leaves them to investigate the Devil Bear.
Chuck Hunt, a member of the dig, tells Velma the only local electricity is produced by them. There's some Shaggy and Scooby antics and Scooby gets stuck in a small cave. I know I play too much Minecraft because I expected to start hearing a hiss. Their antics reveal clues to the hidden treasure. Velma finds evidence of a recent explorer.
The Professor and Chuck tell her about a local hermit, McGee. One of my childhood dreams was to be a hermit or recluse. The gang pays a visit to McGee to find out about the Devil Bear. Meanwhile, there are Scooby and Shaggy antics. Really Scooby and Shaggy's antics aren't incorporated well into the episode. It's kind of like Tom and Jerry: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory. Occasionally, slapstick interrupts the plot.
Scrappy hears the Devil Bear in the middle of the night and goes after him. Scooby ditches Shaggy to the Devil Bear while rescuing Scrappy. Shaggy gets paint on the back of his shirt. Later, Velma finds equipment in a hollow stalagmite. The team breaks in half and the show chooses to follow the half not investigating the mystery. And slapstick ensues.
The ending antics have Shaggy and Scooby capture the Devil Bear.
The background paintings of the cave walls are sometimes decent and sometimes beautiful. The cave paintings have a similar spread in quality.
